Me and Eva

Something had last weekend with Eva. Not in the activities (apart from one), but in the feeling I had about my relationship with Eva. I was getting a glimpse into our future, when she is older and we will have the kind of relationship that parents have with their adult children. Conversations that are about a range of things in life, hanging out and doing things that we both genuinely enjoy. Sure, we did spend 15 minutes talking about Mr. Sparkles' experiences in Rolly Polly City. But we also walked together and talked about school, we ate oysters together, we even worked out together.

The one activity that was new this weekend was Eva's reading. Not being a big reader historically, this particular book series clicked. She picked up from where she was in school having it read to her and started right away when we got on the road. Over the course of the weekend she made it halfway through the first book, posing after we arrived with her new favorite reads.

Although I have taken Eva with me to a hotel work out room before, this time she took part in her own workout. First on the ball, but then a legit 20 minutes on the treadmill. All the while trying to keep holding Teddy, she kept looking me so proudly that she was keeping up.

The feature is definitely the beach. This time a more fine powder-like sand, but it came with fewer shells. We found some, and of course the temperature necessitated a winter coat on the beach. But still nothing better than a long stroll on the beach.

Writing, if you look closely, an umprompted "Love you dad" in the sand. You need to look closely, but it's there.

Not to be too routine, but we made our way for oysters, me with the raw and her with half a dozen chargrilled oysters (the best she'd ever had, she said).

The beauty of Eva, or one of the many beauties, is that she has such an appreciation for simple things in life. After a walk on the beach and oysters, she declared the day "the best ever." And we hadn't even tuned into the UK game later that day, played school or had our hairdresser session.
